Pre-placement Examinations

The pre-placement or pre-employment examination serves two vital occupational health and safety functions:
  1. It determines an applicant’s ability to perform a specific job; and
  2. It provides a baseline medical status against which to evaluate any occupational illnesses or injuries that might arise during employment. This is necessary for both the protection of the company and the employee.

The pre-placement examination can only be administered by a certified occupational medical practitioner (OMP) who will determine if an applicant is fit to perform necessary job functions despite any pre-existing medical conditions. It’s important to note that a company cannot legally deny an applicant a job solely on the grounds of a medical diagnosis or reject applicantswith disabilities. The company can only deny the applicant employment if, at the recommendation of the OMP, the applicant is unable to perform the essential functions of the job.

An OMP from Tlakula Occupational Health Services (TOHS)will perform these examinations, which include:

  • A physical examination
  • Vision test
  • Hearing test
  • Pulmonary function test
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Chest X-ray
  • Blood tests
  • Urinalysis and drug testing

As a leading occupational medical service provider we provide pre-employment examination at our walk in clinics or offer a mobile clinic for on-site medicals.
